Auto Accident Chiropractor

Common questions following a car accident:

1. Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor before seeing a chiropractor or massage therapist?

No, you do not need a referral from your primary before seeing the chiropractor. The chiropractor can write the referral to the massage therapist.

2. Will my auto insurance pay for all the treatments and supplies?

Yes. Your auto insurance in Oregon has personal injury protection (PIP) which covers all medically necessary treatment including some supplies such as pillows, vitamins, theragun, biofreeze/topical spray and braces/belts. Furthermore, each driver in Oregon must have a minimum of $15,000 of coverage. It will cover chiropractic, massage and acupuncture. You DO NOT need regular health insurance to receive treatment.

3. How soon after my accident can I come in?

As soon as possible. Research has shown that the earlier treatment you receive the less likely your symptoms will be chronic. If symptoms are severe adjustments may not be performed for a week or two and care may be directed more toward massage and/or acupuncture.

4. What are some of the common symptoms from a car accident?

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Dizziness and/or vertigo
  • Numbness and tingling in the arms and legs
  • Loss of concentration or mental confusion (concussions)
  • Fatigue or feeling slowed down

 5. What will the first treatment be like?

It is very similar to most doctors appointments where you will fill out all necessary paperwork and then see the chiropractor for a thorough history and examination. At that time it will be determined if you need xrays or MRI immediately or if it is safe to get your first spinal adjustment. Most patients are able to get an adjustment on their first visit.  Most initial appointments last around one hour.

6. Does it hurt to get adjusted or massaged after my car accident?

It depends on many factors including how severe your injuries are and your physical health before the accident. Yet, it is common to feel some soreness as if you did a hard workout the day before, yet, most people are able to go about their daily lives after treatment. After your first couple of treatments, most of the initial soreness resolves and pain relief begins.

7. Do I have to get my neck cracked or adjusted?

No, you don't have to have your neck adjusted if you don’t want to. We have alternate ways of manipulating the spine without the traditional cracking noise that most people associate which chiropractic adjustments. The instrument we use is called an arthrostim. It provides rapid impulses that gently adjust the spine without the cracking sound.

8. Can you prescribe me muscle relaxers or pain medication if needed?

We have a Naturopathic Doctor on staff that can provide medication such as muscle relaxers and pain medication if needed. Doctors of Chiropractic are not licensed to prescribe medication.

Treating Auto Accident Injury

We treat numerous people in our office that have been involved in car accidents. We get lots of questions from car accident patients because car accidents are one of those life events that don’t happen often. Like buying a car, or having a child, you are thrust into a situation that you don’t have much (or any) experience in. Insurance rules can be deeply confusing and that is one aspect our auto accident chiropractors in Tigard, OR, can help you with.

Here are two scenarios recommending what to do in an auto accident situation:

Scenario #1: You’ve just been rear-ended

Call your insurance company to inform them of the accident and be sure to mention that you will be seeking medical care.

Your insurance company will give you a claim number that you bring with you to your first appointment. Then call the insurance company of the at-fault party. Request the claim number from the at-fault insurance company that you will use to repair your vehicle or pay it off if it is totaled.

The other party’s insurance is also ultimately responsible for all injury care that you receive. This means after all treatment is complete your insurance company will be reimbursed by the at-fault company.

Scenario #2: You are at fault

Call your insurance company to inform them of the accident and be sure to mention that you will be seeking medical care. Your insurance will be paying for your damaged vehicle as well as your medical care but in this scenario, there could be deductibles.

Straight Up Chiropractic covers your personal injury protection deductible for you so you can get the care you need without worrying about the cost.

Accidents are stressful, confusing and all around no fun! We have lots of experience with auto accidents and insurance. If you or someone you care about has been in an accident, your fault or not, let our auto accident chiropractors in Tigard, OR, help you. We’ll provide guidance for tricky situations such as the above as well as physical recovery as efficiently as possible.

We would love to talk about your scenario, treat your injuries and get you back to living your life
